Unless you can really convey value, or have some cult following, I don't think creating your own group is that useful. Take a look at how many groups affiliated with large companies/organizations are on LinkedIn and have very few members. I suppose if you can create some super brand that people can't live without, this might work, but there is a serious surplus of groups on L.I. IMO.

LI is a great source of information and passive candidates. I also like seeing what my friends and contacts are doing and who they're connecting with. Starting a group is fun and makes sense, too. Thanks for the info!
